Kidical Mass is back in Southwest Portland!

Meet at SW 42nd Ave & SW Vermont St playground / parking lot in Gabriel Park
Meet/play at 1:30 p.m., ride leaves by 2:00 p.m.

We’ll enjoy a short, nearly flat ride from Gabriel Park to the Alpenrose velodrome and Pendleton Park. This 3-mile loop will end near burrito and frozen yogurt shops, across the street from the start point at Southwest 42nd & Vermont. We ride at a slow pace for little pedalers. Kids should wear a helmet, be able to ride in a straight line, start and stop. Cargo bikes, trikes, tandems, trailers and tag-a-longs are great too. We’ll ride together as a group, rain or shine, because kids are traffic too! Come ride with us!

Bike to School Day to Day of Action

National Bike to School Day is Wednesday, May 8th, but here in Oregon it’s also May 8th Day of Action and Portland Public Schools won’t be in session. So we’ve planned an alternate 3 R’s: Ride, Rally, and #RedforEd to join the big event.

Wednesday, May 8, 2019
9:45 a.m.
Clinton City Park
Facebook event page

Join our bike train to Tom McCall Waterfront Park where we’ll join tens of thousands of educators and supporters around the state for the Fund our Future, Fund our Schools Rally and March for Our Students event.

Wear red!
9:45 a.m. – Bike Train leaves Clinton City Park (5576 SE Division St, Portland, OR 97206)
10:15 a.m. – Bike Train leaves plaza at south end of Eastbank Esplanade (SE Caruthers St & Eastbank Esplanade, Portland, OR 97202)
11:00 a.m. – Fund our Future, Fund our Schools Rally
12:00 p.m. – March for Our Students

Parades can be hard to walk with bikes so some families may choose to lock up at the park. The parade route hasn’t been released yet so we don’t know if it will be a loop and return to the park (keep an eye on the rally/parade Facebook event for march info).

Not coming from the Southeast? You should still bike to the event! Use our Facebook event to gather a bike train from your quadrant. Need route advice? Let’s route plan in the Facebook event discussion area.

“Oregon students are dealing with low graduation rates, large class sizes, and schools in crisis. Lawmakers are considering the Student Success Act, which would be an unprecedented investment in Oregon schools–increasing the K-12 statewide budget by 18%.”

Kidical Mass PDX CycloFemme Ride 2019

May 12 at 10am
Sewallcrest Park (SE 31st Ave & Market St, Portland, OR 97214)
Facebook event page

RIDE Together.
RISE Together.
May 12, we ride–worldwide.

The exponential reach of CycloFemme begins with each of us. We all play a role in growing our community by inviting one more to ride. We know the power of the bicycle to change lives.

CycloFemme’s annual Mother’s Day ride unites riders, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or bicycle preference to share in the joy of cycling. Year round, our global community inspires and empowers other women, by making their passion public and the joy in cycling contagious. Ride with us as we Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, Empower the Future of Women in Cycling.

Kidical Mass PDX celebrates Mother’s Day and CycloFemme 2019 with a park-to-park ride of 2.5 flat miles with some fun stuff along the way.
We’ll start at Sewallcrest Park and end at Colonel Summers Park, providing a week-in-advance park preview of Southeast Portland Sunday Parkways 2019! Note: we won’t be riding the Sunday Parkways route (here’s the Parkways map); see our route here.

SNACKS! No bike ride or Mother’s Day is complete without snacks!
We’ll bring some snacks to share, and bringing your lunch is encouraged so we can have a picnic together at Colonel Summers Park at the end of our ride. If you want to grab lunch while you’re out, we’ll be very close to two food truck pods, Cartopia (1200 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR) and Hawthorne Asylum (1080 SE Madison St, Portland, OR) which are both kid- and bike-friendly for eating at or grabbing food to go to bring back to the park.

Helmets are required for those under 18, and recommended for all. We’ll ride together as a group because kids are traffic, too!

Bike Shop Storytime with Cycle City’s Alison Farrell!

Sunday, March 10th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. – Facebook event
Clever Cycles (900 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, Oregon 97214)

Join us for a special Bike Shop Storytime with author and artist Alison Farrell who will read and sign her amazing and popular book, Cycle City!

From the publisher:
“When little Etta the Elephant goes to her Aunt Ellen’s house, she takes a journey through bicycle-filled Cycle City, a town filled with bikes of all kinds! At the end of the day, a special surprise awaits Etta–the most amazing bicycle parade imaginable. Detail-rich illustrations in this fun seek-and-find book paint the colors of this unusual town where everyone rides some kind of bike–whether a penny-farthing, a two-wheeled unicycle, or a conference bike, everyone is on wheels! Packed with prompts and lots to see on every page, this is a sweet story for the sharpest of eyes.”

Stories will be read in the family-friendly bike shop’s comfy play area (and yes, the bathroom has a changing table!) and if you’d like to learn more about bicycling as a family, stick around for a Q&A session afterwards.

What, you wanted a bike parade, too?! We’ll be biking the 3/4 of a mile along a family-friendly route to Books with Pictures after each hour-long storytime/Q&A. Suitable for even the smallest riders. Come a little early to ask about borrowing a bike for the ride–Clever Cycles has a few bakfietsen and longtail kid-carrying cargo bikes to loan for families who want to join in on the fun.

Thank you thank you thank you to Liz Holladay from Clever Cycles for the awesome illustration and Leslie Hickey of Hoarfrost Press for the graphic lettering.

Kidical Mass in the 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

Bring a smile, a friend, and join us behind the Kidical Mass PDX banner for some parade fun! St. Agatha School in Sellwood has invited us to ride in their St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 16th and we need YOU to ride with us!

Facebook users can RSVP and connect in the Facebook event page.

Join us for bike decorating at the Sellwood Park playground (SE Miller St & SE 7th Ave, Portland, OR 97202) between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. We’ll have some decorations to share, but if you have ribbons, crepe paper, flowers, or anything else GREEN please bring it along. Snacks for sharing also very welcome. Costumes are great, too!

At around 11:30 a.m. we’ll ride four blocks over to SE 15th Ave & SE Miller St to be ready for the noon parade start.

We always ride at a kid-friendly pace and in a large group. No one will be left behind–the focus is on having fun! During the parade our pace will be even slower than usual. Riders should be able to ride in a line, to follow verbal directions, and to stop at stop signs. Helmets are required for those under 16, and recommended for all.

After the parade, stick around for the family-friendly festival: carnival, live music, Irish dancers, both authentic Irish food and local food cart vendors, and a beer garden. More info on the St. Agatha School festival here.
