St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

Kidical Mass PDX will ride again in the St. Agatha School St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 16, and we need YOU to ride with us!

Join us for bike decorating at the Sellwood Park Playground between 10:30 and 11:30. We’ll have some decorations to share, but if you have ribbons, crepe paper, flowers, or anything else GREEN please bring it along. Snacks for sharing also very welcome. Costumes are great too!

We’ll ride over to SE 15th & Miller to line up for the parade around 11:30, and the parade starts at noon.

The Irish say: “You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.”

And so it is, too, that you’ll never ride a bike by turning the pedals in your mind.

The Irish say: “You’ve got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your father was.”

And so, too, must our kids learn do their own riding, no matter how many miles we ourselves have pedaled.

Tour de Sellwood

Just cause the leaves are falling doesn’t mean that family biking has to stop.

Just cause the leaves are falling doesn’t mean that family biking has to stop. The next Kidical Mass PDX ride is on November 17th. We’re going to ride a loop around the Sellwood-Westmoreland neighborhoods (approx 4 miles). The ride starts/ends at Sellwood Park (SE 7th & Lexington). Meet at 12:30. Roll out at 1pm. Kids are encouraged to ride their own bikes… assuming they can follow directions and stop/start as needed. We ride on low-traffic streets, stay together as a group, and obey all traffic laws. Oregon law requires kids to wear helmets.

There is no specific theme, but bike decorations and silly attire are encouraged.

No need to register… just show up!

August’s ice cream ride

(Updated 8/15 to correct the first stop.)

It’s August and it’s warm. Let’s ride for ice cream!

This Saturday, August 18th, the Kidical Mass ride has 1 or 2 stops for ice cream and 1 for playing. It’s a loop ride of about 3.5 miles, but with the breaks it shouldn’t seem too long. We will be going up the hill on SE Lincoln Street (from SE 52nd Ave to SE 54th Ave), but otherwise it will be a nice, easy ride.

We are starting at Clinton City Park, leaving from the playground area at 1pm. From there we will head west on Woodward/Clinton. The first stop is at the Salt & Straw push-cart for ice cream. Next we head just around the corner for play time at Sewallcrest Park. Feel free to buy other treats and eats and enjoy them at the park too! (While there the grown-ups can decide if we should also stop at Dairy Queen on our way back to the beginning.)

After our play-break we will head east on SE Lincoln to SE 56th Ave which will take us to (Dairy Queen and) a light where we can cross Division safely to return to the playground at Clinton City Park.

Hope to see you for some fun in the sun! Remember it is this Saturday, 8/18!

Here is a Google Map with our approximate route (it won’t allow routing on the paths inside park boundaries).

Family Bike Camping July 28-29

Update: The trip is full. Thanks for all the interest. –Andy

Have you ever thought it would be fun to take your family camping by bike? We at Kidical Mass HQ have been thinking that very thought. We recruited the bicycle camping denizens at Cycle Wild to help us put together a suitable family oriented trip.

The reality of connecting Portland to a campground involves at least some stretch on not-so-family-bike-friendly roads. This won’t really be a normal Kidical Mass ride in that young kids are NOT encouraged to ride their own bikes. The route is about 22 miles (one way), involves busy/ narrow roads, and has 2 significant hills (descents on the way there but climbs on the return). We will travel as a group, obey the rules of the road, and take frequent breaks.

We don’t charge for the ride itself but there is a campground fee. Cost will be determined depending how many families show up. Best guess is that it’ll be about $15 per family to cover sites and firewood.

You’re on your own for food. Expect to eat Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast in camp. There will be plenty of breaks along the way for lunch and snacks.

Still want to come? Great! Send me an email (54canoe at the mail with a “G” daut com) letting me know how many adults, kids and bikes you’ll be and I’ll add your name to “the list”. Campground space is limited and we want to keep the group a reasonable size for riding on rural roads. Also, if you tell me you’re coming and it turns out that you won’t be, please let me know asap.

On July 28 we’ll meet at Woodstock Park playground (SE Harold & 48th) at 10am. I imagine it’ll take us about 5 hours to ride to Dodge Park (at the confluence of the Sandy and Bull Run Rivers). We’ll return Sunday afternoon.

See the route here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1418319

Also, we still have KM t-shirts ($20), stickers($1) and spoke cards($1) for sale. Send me an email at the address above and I’ll get you in touch with the shirt girl. Or they’ll be available for purchase on the ride.

No need to use the “Register” button below to sign up for the ride… just send me an email… see above

Kidical Mass SE Park Loop and Potluck

Join us on Saturday, May 19th, at 2pm at the Mt. Scott Park (adjacent to the community center and pool). We will ride a simple neighborhood loop, stopping at Woodstock park to stretch our legs and have a small break. Then we will venture back to Mt. Scott park for a family-friendly, neighborhood barbeque potluck! It would be great if you could bring a dish or item to share at the barbeque. Also, if you have any LAWN GAMES, please do bring them! We’ll have some fun setting up and playing lawn games while the potluck is underway, roughly 4pm-7pm.

Kidical Mass East Portland Playground Ride

On April 28, join Kidical Mass a little further east for a relaxed family ride from Hancock Park (near Jason Lee Elementary and Rocky Butte) to Glenhaven Park for a snack and playtime, and then looping back to Hancock Park. Both parks include playgrounds, plus we’ll cruise through the Rose City Golf Course on our way. SUGGESTION: Bring a kite if you have one! There is lots of open space at Glenhaven Park. We’ll bring materials to make paper bag kites, too.

We will stay together as a group and follow all traffic safety laws. Helmets are required for children and encouraged for adults. Kids riding their own bikes should be able to ride in a more or less straight line, stop and start as necessary, and follow verbal directions.
